At Immigration District, our mission is simple — to make your migration journey easier by keeping you updated with the latest changes that could affect your plans.
Australia has just made an important policy change, and if you’re looking to study, work, or settle there, you’ll want to know what’s happening.
In August 2025, the Australian Government confirmed that the National Planning Level (NPL) — essentially the intake cap for new international students — will rise from 270,000 in 2025 to 295,000 in 2026.
It’s a positive step for aspiring students worldwide, but here’s the catch — demand will still far outweigh supply. That’s why knowing the details and acting early will be key to your success.
What’s Changing in 2026?
1. More Student Places — But Still Limited
- 295,000 international student commencements will be allowed in 2026 — that’s 25,000 more spots than last year.
- This is still below pre-pandemic levels, so competition remains fierce.
2. Strategic Focus on Priority Groups
Australia wants to manage growth in a way that benefits its economy and communities. Institutions can grow their share of the cap if they:
- Build partnerships with Southeast Asian countries.
- Provide more student housing to ease rental pressures.
- Support priority cohorts, such as students from the Pacific, Timor-Leste, or government scholarship programs.
3. New Visa Processing Rules (MD111)
Under Ministerial Direction 111, student visa applications are now managed in two speeds:
- Priority processing for the first 80% of an institution’s allocated cap.
- Slower processing for applications lodged after that point.
Translation: Apply early, and choose a provider with space in their priority quota for the best chance of a fast approval.
What This Means for You
If you’re planning to study in Australia in 2026:
- Start early — being ahead in the queue could save you months.
- Pick your institution carefully — not all will have room in their priority cap for long.
- Be prepared — visa fees are higher (nearly tripled recently), and checks are stricter than ever.
